Weather Company and Brands Backing ‘Climate Week NYC’

Weather Company, Weather Channel, Weather Underground and more bring lots of eyeballs and lots of online ‘clicks’ with them as backers of September 2013 Climate Week NYC event.


The Weather Company, which says it reaches some 100-million U.S. households on TV and 155 million monthly unique visitors on TV and online outlets, is teaming with a low-carbon leadership nonprofit organization in a media partnership aimed at promoting the September 23-30 Climate Week NYC, now in its fifth year.

Including big brand names such as The Weather Channel, Weather Underground, and Weather Services International (WSI), The Weather Company said in a statement that “climate change is not a political issue; it is a scientific issue — and the science tells us we have to act.” Weather Company Chairman & CEO David Kenny said the company and its brands “are committed to telling the climate story and increasing climate change awareness.”

The action is notable as just one of a series of climate-related initiatives undertaken by The Weather Channel and its corporate owner indicating their increasingly supportive approach to climate change issues. Owned by a consortium consisting of NBC Universal and private equity firms Bain Capital and The Blackstone Group, the company, and perhaps most noticeably The Weather Channel, in recent years had gone through a series of on-again/off-again attitudes toward climate science issues. Most recently, the company and its Weather Channel, Weather Underground, and other affiliates appear to have been on a decidedly “on-again” trajectory.

The company and its NGO partner, The Climate Group, with operations in New York, China, Europe, and India, say the Climate Week NYC event “has become one of the most important annual global forums on climate change and the potential of the low carbon economy.” The initiative is supported by big-name brands such as Swiss Re, Hewlett-Packard, and NASDAQ, and the Climate Group, with four separate institutional membership categories, says its full list of corporate members alone have combined annual revenue of more than $1 trillion.
