Columbia Journalism Review’s Science/Environment ‘Observatory’

“The Observatory,” an online feature critiquing press coverage of science and the environment, is joining similar Columbia Journalism Review efforts on business/finance journalism and on political reporting.

In a press release announcing the effort, CJR said mainstream coverage of these issues “took something of a step forward last year, abandoning much of the false balance that has long characterized the coverage of climate change – that maddeningly reflexive need to give the fringe-dwelling skeptic equal weight against overwhelming scientific consensus.”

Issues like “a tendency toward alarmism” still call out for a media watchdog, the academics’ magazine said in announcing the new site. “The need for credible and thorough journalism will only become more crucial as the new century unfolds,” it said, acknowledging shrinking and disappearing science desks at newspapers.
